Estimated number of homeless people in the US, by shelter status. Sheltered homeless are those staying in emergency shelters or transitional housing programs.
Unsheltered homeless are those 'sleeping rough' (e.g. sleeping in parks). Figures correspond to 'point-in-time' estimates obtained by counting homeless people in late
January of each year.
